CAPE VERDE ANTHEM
August 25, 2020
Sing, brother
Sing my brother
because Freedom is an anthem
and man is a certainty.
Worthily, plant the seed
in the sand of the naked island.
In the precipice of life,
hope is the size of the sea,
which embrace us
Sentinel of seas and winds,
persevering, among stars and the Atlantic
intones the song of Freedom.
Sing, brother
Sing my brother
because Freedom is an anthem
and man is a certainty.
Canta, irmão
canta meu irmão
que a Liberdade é hino
e o Homem a certeza.
Com dignidade, enterra a semente
no pó da ilha nua
No despenhadeiro da vida a esperança é
do tamanho do mar
que nos abraça
Sentinela de mares e ventos
perseverante
entre estrelas
e o Atlântico
entoa o cântico da Liberdade
Canta, irmão
canta meu irmão
que a Liberdade é hino
e o Homem a certeza.

JAMAICANS LIVING IN UKRAINE WHEN RUSSIA INVADED IN FEBRUARY, SHARE THEIR ACCOUNTS (2022)

Louise Bennett is well-known as the first Caribbean poet who used Creole or patois consistently and to great effect in her ballads, and who relentlessly stood up for the people's language as opposed to standard English which was then considered as the only passport to social elevation.
